This Veterans Day, Amaanah Refugee Services shines a light on a group of heroes often overlooked in conversations about service and sacrifice: those who stood beside U.S. armed forces overseas, risking everything to support American missions.
These heroes took on critical roles—interpreters, guides, support personnel—in some of the most perilous conditions, saving lives and building lasting bonds between distant communities united in purpose.
For Amaanah, Veterans Day serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and patriotism embodied by these extraordinary individuals. For many, the journey to America began with a courageous commitment to support U.S. missions abroad. Ahmad Alaswad, Amaanah’s Executive Director, reflects on their profound contributions:
“These heroes stood with our soldiers in some of the world’s most challenging environments, risking everything to help others and secure a safer future for their families here in America,” he says. “At Amaanah, we feel a profound responsibility to honor their service and offer them the community support they deserve.”
The stories these heroes bring to Amaanah are filled with hardship, bravery, and unwavering loyalty. Many served on the front lines, where their language skills and local knowledge were vital. Some provided intelligence, safeguarded crucial infrastructure, or supported humanitarian missions in conflict zones. For them, these roles were more than a job; they were a commitment to shared ideals and acts of profound trust. Veterans Day reminds us not only of the sacrifices made by U.S. service members but also of the invaluable roles played by these courageous allies.
Beyond the dangers of war, they made immense personal sacrifices, leaving behind homes and families to begin again in a foreign land. “Their courage doesn’t end upon arrival,” says Ahmad. “They bring skills, perspectives, and an unbreakable will to succeed. It’s an honor to work with them and support their journey.”
Through Amaanah’s programs, we help these heroes find stability and belonging. Whether through job training, educational support, or community engagement, Amaanah stands by them as they build new lives. This Veterans Day, we encourage everyone to remember the contributions of these heroes who served alongside American forces and to honor the strength they bring to our nation.
“Veterans Day is a celebration of resilience and sacrifice,” says Ahmad. “For us at Amaanah, it’s a moment to thank our community of heroes for their service and to acknowledge that their commitment to America’s safety and values is as profound as any. They embody the spirit of determination and patriotism, and their contributions deserve recognition.”
As we honor Veterans Day, let’s celebrate not only the veterans in uniform but also those whose bravery has bridged cultures and communities. Amaanah remains dedicated to supporting these heroes, helping them thrive in their new homeland, and reminding them that their service and sacrifice are deeply valued.
