Houston Celebrates Refugee Community with Soccer, Art, and Family Fun

AMAANAH’S COMMUNITY CUP 2024

On November 23rd, Houston came together for the first Amaanah Community Cup – a celebration of Houston’s refugee community, organized by Amaanah Refugee Services and generously sponsored by Rotary 5890. Almost 400 family and friends enjoyed a perfect day of movement and creativity, with fun and food for all.

The event was held at Revolution Soccer and combined sports, art, family activities, and community spirit to create a truly memorable day.

Ahmad Alaswad, Executive Director of Amaanah, spoke to the importance of the event:
“Bringing the community together in this way is vital. It’s not just about soccer; it’s about connection, opportunity, and creating a sense of belonging for everyone involved.”

ACC Core team on the dayThe event began early for Amaanah’s Community Cup core team—Michelle Shattuck, Jake Love, Mohammad Bayan and Coach Amine Amrouni—arriving at Revolution Soccer at 7:30 AM to prepare the venue.

By 8:00 AM, our dedicated group of volunteers was arriving, ready to make the day a success. Organized into hardworking teams, they managed the various areas of the venue, including children’s activities, the lunch table, logistics. Volunteers set up tables, organized spaces, and ensured everything ran smoothly.

Volunteer Lead Jake Love expressed his gratitude: “I’m so grateful to everyone who showed up. The volunteers were amazing—they worked tirelessly and made everything run smoothly. It’s their dedication that makes events like this possible.”

Senior Operations Manager Michelle Shattuck highlighted the contributions of one standout volunteer: “One of our volunteers, Yousef, took an amazing amount of direction and responsibility at the event! He helped us out at every turn and truly embodies the spirit of volunteerism.”Yousef and Dawson at ACC 2024

Yousef comments: “Amaanah is a chance for me to step up and support refugees in our community while having fun and making friends along the way.” Yousef said his favorite part of the event was “seeing people who love soccer and those passionate about helping refugees come together in one place, united and excited to do what they love.”  Special thanks to Yousef and all our volunteers.

A Day of Soccer and Celebration

The centerpiece of the event was a thrilling soccer tournament that ran from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Eight local teams battled it out on the field, showcasing skills, determination, and teamwork. After several hours of intense play, the Houston All Stars claimed first place, earning the champion’s trophy. ASC took second place, and the Amaamah Lions Team A finished third, with each team receiving medals. Coaches were also recognized with Amaanah caps, adding a personal touch to their contributions.

Our trophy winners and sponsors were celebrated at the end of day presentations. Corporate sponsors included the Rotary Club 5890, Archpoint Pain Institute, Hewad Services, Big Tex Injury Law, and Pernia Latif, whose generosity made the event possible.

Soccer – and so much more

The event offered something for everyone. Children enjoyed bounce houses and a giant soccer darts game. Our Amaanah children’s art gallery invited creativity from the youngsters, who were invited to submit their creations for our theme “What does Amaanah mean to you?”  We’re excited to showcase the creativity and aspirations of Houston’s youngest refugee artists in the future.

Lunch bags, including juice, fruit, and cheese, were provided for Amaanah’s refugee client children, and local vendors like Mad Dogs and Taco Truck offered delicious food throughout the day. Professional vendors, including a legal advisor and an insurance broker, also provided resources for families, enhancing the event’s holistic approach to community support.

Amaanah’s clients were able to attend the event easily thanks to PSSI Shuttle Services, who operated a shuttle loop using one of their luxury vans.

A Hard Day’s Work Worth the Effort

Amaanah’s Community Cup was a day of hard work and joy, smiles and laughter with a thrilling soccer finish and celebrations. The event was also meaningful, creating connections, celebrating diversity, and uplifting the refugee community.

The success of this event demonstrates the power of collective effort. With this year’s triumph, Amaanah Refugee Services has set the stage for an even bigger and better Amaanah Community Cup in 2025.
